Use AssistCall with Open Dental
AssistCall answers your business calls 24/7 and can send each call, message and booking to Open Dental through Live API actions, Webhook, n8n.
Open Dental: Dental practice management software with open-source roots, used by solo and group practices for scheduling, charting, billing and insurance.
Connects
Example call
A patient calls to book a cleaning; AssistCall finds her by phone number in Open Dental, offers an open slot and creates the appointment through the API; the front desk sees it on the Open Dental schedule and gets the call summary by email.
- Once your office has an Open Dental developer key (approved by Open Dental Vendor Relations), look up the caller by phone number during the call (GET /patients) so the receptionist can greet returning patients by name.
- With a paid API permission tier, check open slots (GET /appointments/Slots) and create the appointment (POST /appointments) while the patient is still on the line.
- Send AssistCall's appointment.booked events to an n8n workflow that creates the matching appointment in Open Dental through the same API key.
How it connects
- Live API actions: During the call, the receptionist calls the app's API with your key to look up or create records.
- Webhook: Signed JSON for every call, message and booking, sent to any HTTPS URL you choose.
- n8n: Start an n8n workflow with a webhook node, then call the app with its node or an HTTP request.
- Call forwarding: Forward your business line to AssistCall when busy, after hours or always. Works with any carrier.
About Open Dental's API
- Partner API: the vendor approves access
- Style: REST (JSON over HTTPS); FHIR interface also available
- Authentication: Authorization header carrying a developer key and a per-office customer key
- On Zapier: no. On Make: no.
Not self-serve: a developer key comes from Open Dental Vendor Relations (requests take 1-3 business days), then the office enables the API and adds a customer key under Setup > Advanced Setup > API. The office must run eConnector. Read All access is free but limited to 1 request per 5 seconds; paid tiers ($15-$35 per location per month, paid by the developer) allow 1 request per second and writes such as creating appointments. API Events (subscriptions) push database changes to a URL you choose. Open Dental recommends a BAA with any third party that handles patient data; AssistCall does not currently offer a HIPAA BAA. No Zapier or Make app exists.
Not included: no one-click Open Dental app, no listing in Open Dental's marketplace, no two-way sync, and no partnership with Open Dental Software.
